Summary
- Screen Gems expands focus to digital-native filmmakers.
- YouTube executive Fede Goldenberg to lead the division.
- Sony leverages creators' existing audience trust and IP.

Sony Pictures has appointed Fede Goldenberg, a former YouTube executive, to lead its Screen Gems division. This marks a strategic pivot for the studio, which has historically focused on genre films and comedies. Screen Gems will now also embrace theatrical projects from "digital-native storytellers" – filmmakers gaining prominence on online platforms.
Goldenberg's expertise lies in nurturing talent from the digital space. He will leverage his extensive relationships to broaden the studio's pipeline of creators who have already built substantial online followings. This approach taps into an established audience trust, potentially reducing marketing costs and accelerating intellectual property development.
Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, highlighted the growing influence of creators outside traditional Hollywood. Goldenberg, who previously served as YouTube's head of film and TV partnerships, is credited with elevating careers like those of Curry Barker and Kane Parsons. Ashley Brucks, who previously led Screen Gems, will move into a producing role.
Goldenberg brings over 20 years of experience in entertainment, technology, and digital media. His tenure at YouTube included significant creator initiatives and partnerships, such as Markiplier's digital release of "Iron Lung" and securing the rights to stream the Oscars. Screen Gems, under Brucks' leadership, recently released successful genre films like "Tarot" and "Insidious: The Red Door."
