Sony Creative Products (SCP) has set an ambitious goal to create original characters with universal appeal, aiming for annual sales of 10 billion yen (approximately $62.8 million) by 2030. This strategic move positions Sony to compete in the lucrative character goods market, currently dominated by companies like Sanrio and San-X. To achieve this, SCP has formed a dedicated team focused on developing potential hit characters.
Among Sony's emerging characters is Nemu the Night Owl Bear, a creation that has rapidly gained over 1 million followers in just one year. This character, which embodies the theme of societal stress and sleeplessness, has found popularity not only in Japan but also in South Korea. SCP is developing merchandise and an anime series for Nemu, leveraging the character's resonance.
SCP is also employing innovative approaches to enhance fan engagement, such as its Yurakucho Museum in Tokyo. This exhibition space utilizes advanced technologies like haptics to create immersive experiences, as demonstrated with a Pingu exhibition. This mirrors Sony's success in doubling merchandise sales for Pingu in Japan last year, showcasing their capability to revitalize existing IPs.
