Sony's Digital Shift: The End of Physical Games?

Sony is set to discontinue the production of new physical game discs beginning January 2028, a move that has cast a shadow over the gaming industry. Retailers like Pink Gorilla Games lament the loss of physical sales, sharing, and a sense of true ownership for gamers. The Video Game History Foundation and boutique publishers such as iam8bit and Lost in Cult have voiced profound disappointment, emphasizing the critical role of physical media in game preservation, ownership, and consumer choice.

This transition aligns with a long-standing trend, as digital game sales now account for the vast majority of revenue; Capcom, for instance, reported 93 percent of its sales were digital in its last fiscal year. Despite the outcry, immediate impacts may be minimal, as physical sales for new PlayStation 5 titles have already been declining. Sony's move towards a digital-only future is not entirely new, evidenced by the digital-only PS5 model launched in 2020 and the optional disc drive for the PS5 Pro.
