Singer Sona Mohapatra has voiced concerns regarding professional accountability within the music industry. Recounting an experience at a Sufi festival in New Delhi, she described Daler Mehndi's performance as disappointing, noting his apparent disorientation and struggles with vocal delivery.
Mohapatra reflected on her decision to remain silent out of respect for the veteran artist but questioned if this was the appropriate response. She stated that while artists deserve dignity and empathy for their contributions, audiences also have a right to expect an honest performance, especially when they have paid for the event.
The singer believes that respect for an artist's legacy should not negate the need for professional accountability. She emphasized that respect is a reciprocal relationship and that audiences deserve consideration too, especially when artists may be unwell or unable to perform optimally.
