- The joke swap has a history of controversial and personal jokes.
The popular 'Saturday Night Live' tradition, the joke swap segment on Weekend Update, made its return for the season finale on May 17, 2026. Anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che engaged in their recurring bit, where they read offensive jokes written by the other for the first time on live television.
This latest installment featured particularly shocking material. Che read a joke about Michael Jackson, and Jost was tasked with a joke concerning Kanye West's antisemitism. A new twist saw Jost offer to shave his head as an apology for a joke, with a barber called to the stage, but Che ultimately stopped the stunt.
The joke swap, introduced in 2015 and regular since 2018, typically occurs twice a year. Past iterations have seen Che give Jost racist jokes, while Jost has given Che jokes implying pedophilia. Both comedians have also read jokes about their spouses and other public figures, pushing comedic boundaries.
