Actor Paapa Essiedu has revealed that he has received death threats motivated by race following his casting as Professor Snape in the upcoming HBO Max adaptation of the Harry Potter series.
Essiedu described the threats, including messages stating, 'Quit or I'll murder you,' and concerns about his safety. He acknowledged the emotional toll these messages have taken but stated that the abuse fuels his passion to interpret the character uniquely. He emphasized the importance of representation, hoping that children can see themselves in the world of Hogwarts.
The new series, set to debut on HBO Max in 2027, will feature an almost entirely new cast. Essiedu has committed to the role for ten years, anticipating significant life changes. He noted that while he hopes for the best, no one should endure such harassment for their work.
Essiedu, known for his roles in "Black Mirror" and "I May Destroy You," admitted he had not seen the original films but was a childhood fan of J.K. Rowling's books. He highlighted the library as a significant source of escapism during his youth.
The central trio for the new adaptation will be played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Essiedu mentioned that by the time he finishes his ten-year commitment, he will be 45 years old and anticipates potentially having children during this period.
