Smiths Drummer: Band Reunion Impossible, But Solo Projects Okay

Mike Joyce, drummer for the iconic band The Smiths, has shared his perspective on a potential reunion, acknowledging that such an event is now impossible following the passing of bassist Andy Rourke. Joyce, who is promoting his book 'The Drums,' expressed that while he doesn't foresee the band reforming, he would be unbothered if former bandmates Morrissey and Johnny Marr chose to pursue new musical ventures together.

Reflecting on the band's whirlwind success between 1983 and 1987, Joyce recalled their "overnight" ascent. He described the experience as "relentless" yet "incredible," highlighting their rapid journey from playing to a lone admirer at Manchester's Haçienda nightclub to audiences fainting just eight months later. This illustrates the group's "meteoric rise" during their relatively short but impactful career.

Joyce also spoke about his enduring "love-hate relationship" with his hometown, Manchester. He detailed the city's transformation from the 1970s to its present state, expressing immense pride in its evolution. Despite having lived in London and considered Europe, he affirmed that he will always return to Manchester, as it remains his home.
