Obscured Releasing has secured North American distribution rights for Árru, a musical drama centered on a Sàmi family's struggle to safeguard their ancestral land from an impending mining operation. The film, helmed by writer-director Elle Sofe Sara, is slated for a theatrical debut in early 2027, with a subsequent digital release anticipated later in the year.
The narrative follows Maia, a single mother and reindeer herder, whose way of life is threatened by encroaching development. As protests escalate, she seeks aid from a distant family member, unearthing long-hidden family traumas and secrets.
Árru employs traditional Sàmi song and dance to explore themes of familial healing and the profound connection between communities and their environment. After its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the movie was screened at festivals including Sydney and Tribeca, marking its North American premiere.
The film, a co-production involving Swedish and Finnish companies, has also seen its international distribution deals brokered, with screenings planned in various European countries, Australia, and New Zealand. Theatrical distribution in Norway will be managed by Norsk Filmdistribusjon.
