The upcoming horror-comedy Slanted, directed by Amy Wang, is scheduled for release on March 13, promising a fresh and satirical approach to genre themes. The film centers on Joan Huang, a high school senior aiming for prom queen, who undergoes a mysterious cosmetic procedure called Ethnos to appear white.
This transformation, which sees Mckenna Grace taking over the role of Joan, instantly integrates her into the popular crowd. However, the film teases disturbing side effects and a commentary on societal beauty standards that favor lighter complexions. Critics have lauded Slanted as "sharp," "witty," and "bold."
Inspired by Wang's personal experiences, Slanted has already achieved an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes following its festival circuit debut. The movie's unique narrative, described as "Mean Girls meets The Substance," uses its wild premise to explore themes of race and beauty.
Slanted also features Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Elaine Hendrix. The film was shot in the summer of 2024, prior to the release of the acclaimed "The Substance."
