Summary
- Skegness seeks to be the UK's first Town of Culture.
- The winning town receives £3m for a six-month cultural program.
- The deadline for expressions of interest is March 31.

Skegness is making a bid to become the inaugural UK Town of Culture, a designation the local council hopes will spotlight the seaside resort. The Skegness Neighbourhood Board has announced its intention to submit an expression of interest for this prestigious competition. Dozens of towns nationwide are vying for the title, which comes with a substantial £3 million award to develop a six-month cultural program scheduled for 2028.
Graham Marsh, deputy leader of East Lindsey District Council, emphasized Skegness's status as a thriving cultural area, viewing the bid as a prime opportunity to showcase this to the nation. The UK Town of Culture competition is modeled after the established City of Culture but is specifically designed for small and medium-sized towns. Towns will be evaluated on criteria including a strong local narrative and excellence in arts, heritage, and creative industries.
The deadline for expressions of interest is March 31. Paul McCooey, chair of Skegness Neighbourhood Board, noted that while Skegness is known as a welcoming holiday destination with a rich history, its growing cultural scene is less recognized. He expressed pride in submitting the bid, stating it offers a chance to highlight the town's impressive cultural offerings and meet local enthusiasm for more creative activities. The winning town is slated to be announced in 2027.
