Late Star Maggie Smith Waited for Sister Act 3 Script

Whoopi Goldberg has voiced her frustration regarding the extended production timeline for Sister Act 3, revealing the project has been in development for approximately eight years. She expressed that the script has undergone multiple revisions, leading to significant delays and a sense of impatience, especially as she is "getting old." The beloved actress highlighted that even the late Maggie Smith had verbally agreed to return for the sequel and was waiting for the completed script before her passing in September 2024.

The original Sister Act was released in 1992, followed by a sequel in 1993. The franchise has maintained its popularity through decades of home video and television reruns, fueling plans for a third installment that began surfacing around 2015. Despite numerous writers being attached and Disney officially announcing Goldberg's return in December 2020, with Tyler Perry set to produce, the film has remained in production limbo. Goldberg noted that Disney has prioritized other legacy sequels, leaving Sister Act 3 on the backburner, and suggested that renewed fan interest might help.

Despite the considerable setbacks, including the loss of Maggie Smith, Goldberg remains cautiously optimistic about the possibility of future movement on the project. She is eager to reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier, stating, "I want to put those boots on! I want to put that hair on! I want to put on my habit! I am ready." The actress hopes the film will be realized sooner rather than later, acknowledging the deep connection fans have with the Sister Act movies.
