Sinners Surges, Netflix Contenders Unveiled in 2025 Oscar Race

The 2025 awards season is in full swing, and the Oscar race is already shaping up to be a thrilling one. Leading the pack is Sinners, Ryan Coogler's juke-joint vampire quasi-musical that has been generating significant buzz since its release in April. The film has drawn comparisons to Get Out, another crowd-pleasing work of social commentary that was able to maintain its momentum and earn a Best Director nomination for its young Black filmmaker. However, Coogler's past Oscar history has some cautioning against counting their chickens before they hatch.

Meanwhile, Netflix has entered the fall with a slew of potential contenders, though the fall festivals have not exactly clarified which movies the streaming giant will ultimately focus on. While Noah Baumbach's Jay Kelly and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein received mixed reviews, the latter did finish as a runner-up for Toronto's People's Choice Award, a good omen for its Oscar chances. Kathryn Bigelow's A House of Dynamite and Clint Bentley's Train Dreams have also generated positive buzz.

But perhaps the most intriguing category this year is Best Actor, which is shaping up to be a true bloodbath. With compelling narratives surrounding the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet, and Dwayne Johnson, among others, the Academy will have a tough time whittling down the list to just five nominees.
