Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, a celebrated Indian filmmaker, passed away on October 3 in Chennai at the age of 95 following a period of ill health. Rao directed an impressive 60 features across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi, demonstrating a remarkable range spanning farce, fantasy, mythology, and science fiction. He also composed music and acted in occasional roles.
Rao's directorial career commenced in 1972 with the Telugu drama "Neethi Nijayithi." His early work included assisting on the 1957 classic "Mayabazar." His Tamil film "Dikkatra Parvathi" (1974) received the Indian National Film Award for best Tamil feature.
A notable collaboration was with actor Kamal Haasan, beginning with "Sommokadidhi Sokokadidhi" (1979). This partnership produced films like "Pushpaka Vimana" (1987), a dialogue-less comedy, and "Apoorva Sagodharargal" (1989), where Haasan portrayed multiple characters. Rao also had a significant tenure in Kannada cinema with actor Rajkumar.
In Telugu cinema, Rao directed "Mayuri" (1985), which won 14 Nandi Awards. He also helmed "Aditya 369" (1991) and "Bhairava Dweepam" (1994). The Film Federation of India honored him with its Life Achievement Award in 2011.
