Simu Liu Slams Hollywood: "Appalling" Representation Slide

Actor Simu Liu has publicly decried a perceived regression in Hollywood's commitment to Asian representation on screen. He highlights that despite consistent financial and critical successes from films featuring Asian talent, studios continue to view these actors as a casting "risk." Liu contrasted this with the industry's willingness to offer numerous opportunities to white actors even after significant box office failures.

Liu's sentiments are shared by other Asian actors who have spoken about industry limitations. Manny Jacinto noted being typecast into "dad roles" after playing a single father, while Daniel Dae Kim expressed that he is still awaiting an opportunity to play a romantic lead after more than two decades in the industry. John Cho's brief romantic lead role in "Selfie" was also cited as an example of limited opportunities.

Adding to the critique, Daniel Dae Kim pointed out an "overcorrection" where actors are often pigeonholed into roles specific to their nationality, a barrier less common for actors of other ethnicities. This discussion underscores a broader concern about persistent stereotypes and a lack of diverse leading roles for Asian performers in mainstream cinema.
