Sigourney Weaver: Sci-Fi Films Misunderstood

Actress Sigourney Weaver recently voiced her opinion that science-fiction films are frequently misjudged by critics, citing her experience with the 2015 movie 'Chappie'. She explained that the film, directed by Neill Blomkamp, was perceived as a narrative about a robot's quest for humanity, akin to Pinocchio, but was instead evaluated on its special effects. Weaver felt this led to the movie being underestimated.

During the same panel, Weaver revealed that Blomkamp had previously pitched an idea for a new installment in the popular 'Alien' franchise, which would have brought back the character of Newt. She expressed excitement about his designs and script, though she declined to elaborate on why the project did not proceed, only noting it involved 'control.'

Furthermore, Weaver discussed the potential for her own character, Ellen Ripley, to return. She mentioned a meeting with Fox (now Disney) and a script draft by her friend Walter Hill that deeply resonated with her. While she previously felt Ripley should rest, Hill's writing about society's treatment of those who try to help mankind has piqued her interest.
