Sia's Mystery: Faceless Power in 'Nostalgic for the Present'

The performance film "Sia: Nostalgic for the Present," originally created for the singer's 2016 tour, is now showing in select theaters for a limited run. This 75-minute movie is essentially a collection of dance videos designed for stage projection, with a recurring theme of facelessness. Maddie Ziegler, a prominent young dancer, features heavily, mirroring Sia's music. Sia herself appears briefly, her face obscured by a distinctive wig and costume, amplifying the abstract nature of her powerful anthems.

The film presents Sia's greatest hits, dating back a decade, and is described as a promotional piece from 2016. Despite its age, the music remains compelling, with Sia's voice commanding attention. The dance performances, featuring Ziegler's dynamic and expressive movements, are a central element. The film explores Sia's unique public persona, where concealing her face became an integral part of her artistic identity and the perception of her music's strength and resilience.

While the film offers a compelling showcase of Sia's music and artistic vision, it is a retrospective look at a decade-old project. The review suggests that Sia, despite her talent for crafting infectious pop songs, had a notable ambivalence towards public exposure. The film serves as a reminder of her impactful career and the distinctive way she chose to present herself to the world, leveraging mystery to enhance her message of empowerment.
