Shyamalan's Rejected Notebook: The Surprising Twist in Sparks' Bestseller Adaptation
3 Oct, 2025
Summary
- M. Night Shyamalan was once considered to adapt The Notebook
- Shyamalan was busy with The Sixth Sense at the time
- The Notebook became a hit romantic drama, unlike Shyamalan's eerie plots

In a recent interview, author Nicholas Sparks shared a surprising revelation about the adaptation of his novel The Notebook. Sparks disclosed that back in the 1990s, when the screenplay for the 2004 romantic drama was being developed, one of the writers approached to adapt the story was none other than M. Night Shyamalan, the acclaimed filmmaker known for his eerie, supernatural plots.
However, Shyamalan was unable to take on the project as he was fully occupied with the production of his 1999 hit The Sixth Sense, which left audiences stunned with its major twist ending. Unlike Shyamalan's psychological thrillers, The Notebook went on to become a heartwarming tale of love and reunion, depicting the decades-long romance between characters played by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.
Sparks, who has authored over 20 novels that have been adapted into films, is as well known for his emotionally charged stories as Shyamalan is for his suspenseful, twist-filled narratives. The author even paid tribute to Shyamalan's work by incorporating a character in his novel Safe Haven that was inspired by The Sixth Sense.
Now, the two storytellers have come together for their latest project, Remain, which Sparks promises will feature both a love story and "big twists."
