Shyam Pathak, widely recognized for his role as journalist Popatlal in "Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah," initially worked as a salesman in a Mumbai garment shop. Born in 1972 in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, Pathak grew up in a lower-middle-class Gujarati family and spent his formative years in a chawl.
His interest in acting sparked at a young age through spiritual organization plays, where he experienced the thrill of applause. Facing financial difficulties after Class 10, he took on various jobs while attending college, even working as a salesman, which he found embarrassing.
Following his mother's dream, Pathak enrolled in Chartered Accountancy after graduation and began his articleship. However, he felt a strong pull towards acting and sought training at the National Centre for Performing Arts, where he learned from theatre personalities.
Pathak's dedication led him to Barry John's acting school, with financial aid from a friend's trust. He later successfully auditioned for the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, a rigorous process involving thousands of applicants.
After graduating from NSD, Pathak returned to Mumbai and began a television career, appearing in shows like 'Ek Chabi Hai Padose Mein' and eventually landing the iconic role of Popatlal. He attributes his success to hard work, sincerity, and self-belief.
