Sholay Director Confirms Dharmendra's Ploy to Spend Time with Hema Malini

In a recent interview, Sholay director Ramesh Sippy revisited one of the most endearing behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the 1975 classic. Sippy addressed the long-standing rumor that Dharmendra would bribe the film's light boys and assistants to deliberately goof up shots so he could spend more time with his co-star and love interest, Hema Malini, during filming.

Responding with his trademark calm and humor, Sippy confirmed that Dharmendra likely did "a lot of things" to prolong the shoots, but it did not hamper his work as the director. Sippy shared that it took time for him to get the shots he wanted, which in turn gave Dharmendra and Hema Malini ample time to indulge in their off-screen romance.
