Here, Hallorann is shown as a more callous and self-serving individual, willing to assault Taniel's mind to uncover the secrets of the shape-shifting 'It' entity for the U.S. government. Chalk notes that this portrayal highlights Hallorann's own fears and the moral compromises he is willing to make.
