Shambellie House, a significant historic property in Dumfries and Galloway, has embraced a new era of fashion display, years after it housed Scotland's National Museum of Costume. The museum's closure in 2013 saw its collection transferred away, prompting questions about the site's future.
Following restoration, the Shambellie House Trust reopened the building in April 2022 as an arts and heritage centre. A collection of 173 theatrical garments, previously used by Nonsuch History and Dance for performances and workshops across the UK, has now found a new home here.
These authentic reproductions, donated to the Dumfries Theatre Royal and then displayed at Shambellie House, offer a unique viewing experience. Unlike typical museum exhibits behind glass, visitors can get close to admire the intricate details of the costumes.
The exhibition has proven highly popular, leading to an extension of its run. The historic house's atmosphere enhances the display, allowing visitors to imagine past lives while appreciating the artistry of the garments, which will remain until at least early October.
