Audience Rejects Sunny Deol as Muslim Hero

Shabana Azmi has voiced bewilderment over the commercial underperformance of 'Batwara 1947'. Despite widespread praise for its message of humanity, the film has struggled at the box office, a stark contrast to its critical reception. Azmi speculated that audiences' inability to accept Sunny Deol in the role of an Indian Muslim character might be a significant factor.

Director Rajkumar Santoshi echoed these sentiments, revealing that the industry was reluctant to back the film due to its subject matter and Deol's casting. He explained that mainstream cinema producers favored conventional commercial elements over sensitive portrayals of Muslim protagonists, particularly with Deol, who is perceived as a champion of Hindu characters. Santoshi commended Deol for his conviction in taking on the religiously sensitive role.

Adding to the confusion, Azmi noted that some viewers mistakenly believed Deol was portraying a Pakistani character. She also mentioned objections from a Pakistani actor regarding the film's dialect. Santoshi defended Deol's performance, emphasizing the actor's courage in portraying a character standing against fanaticism, a feat he described as nearly impossible in contemporary times.
