SGIFF Shifts Dates for Indie Film Edge
11 Feb
Summary
- Singapore film festival moves to October 21-November 1, 2026.
- New dates aim to avoid Hollywood blockbusters and aid independent films.
- The festival's Film Fund takes a temporary hiatus for restructuring.

The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) has announced its 37th edition will take place earlier, from October 21 to November 1, 2026. This repositioning from its usual late November/early December slot is designed to circumvent competition from year-end Hollywood blockbusters, thereby optimizing theatrical release windows for independent films in Singapore. The festival aims to enhance visibility for world cinema and support distributors and filmmakers in increasing audience engagement.
The earlier dates could align SGIFF with other major film events like the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival. This creates a potential Asian festival circuit, allowing professionals to attend consecutive events. However, it may also intensify competition for film acquisitions among festival programmers.
Jeremy Chua has been elevated to executive director, bringing his producing experience and filmmaker perspective to the role. Previously the general manager, Chua's credits include award-winning films that have premiered at Sundance, Berlinale, and Cannes. He emphasized the festival's commitment to independent and auteur cinema.
