19 Feb
Summary
- Seyfried stars in two recent films with strong female leads.
- Both films explore female strength, needs, and pursuit of equality.
- She believes movies made for women are drawing them to theaters.

Actress Amanda Seyfried recently concluded 2025 with the release of two distinct films, "The Testament of Ann Lee" and "The Housemaid." Both projects, though vastly different in genre, share a common thread: the powerful portrayal of women.
Speaking at a press conference for "The Testament of Ann Lee" at the Berlin Film Festival, Seyfried discussed her attraction to quality projects. She defined quality as a clear vision and an exploration of life through cinematic storytelling with an edge. Seyfried also noted that "The Housemaid," a box office hit, allowed her to "flex" her artistic needs in a different but equally fruitful way.
Seyfried expressed pride that both films focus on women with agency, driven by their needs for equality and safety. She asserted that these dynamic roles, even across different genres, resonate with audiences, particularly women, who are showing up for movies made with them in mind. "The Testament of Ann Lee" premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September and saw a U.S. release on December 25, with a UK release on February 20.
The historical drama features Seyfried as Ann Lee, the founder of the Shaker community known for advocating gender equality and social justice. The film explores her quest for utopia, set to Shaker hymns. Despite missing Oscar nominations, Seyfried earned Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award nominations for her performance.
