Mario Martone's new film, "Scherzetto," features Italian screen legend Toni Servillo as Daniele, an illustrator whose elegant life is upended by his five-year-old grandson. Daniele is called to his childhood home in Naples to care for the imaginative Mario while his daughter and her husband are away.
Confined together, the pair enter an escalating battle of wills. This prompts Daniele to confront his own childhood and family history. "Scherzetto" will premiere out of competition at the Venice Film Festival on September 10th.
Director Martone described the film as featuring "two characters at opposite ends of life, a family situation that is often comic, a single setting, and ghosts." He also noted that his own ghosts emerged during filming.
Servillo co-stars with five-year-old Lorenzo Perrotta, with Serena Rossi, Leonardo Lidi, Gianluca Di Gennaro, and Giovanni Ludeno also in the cast. Rai Cinema International Distribution is handling world sales, with 01 Distribution releasing the film in Italy.
