In a significant move, the Serpentine Gallery in London has announced that it will be hosting a major retrospective of the work of renowned Indian filmmaker and artist Amar Kanwar. The exhibition, set to run from September 2026 to January 2027, will transform the Serpentine North building into a "meditative visual and sonic environment" showcasing Kanwar's visionary creations.
Kanwar has a long-standing relationship with the Serpentine, having previously participated in group exhibitions and contributed to the gallery's programming. This upcoming retrospective will be a comprehensive celebration of his artistic achievements, featuring both new and existing films. To coincide with the exhibition, the Serpentine will also publish a catalog featuring Kanwar's previously unpublished writing, as well as an extensive interview between the artist and the gallery's Artistic Director, Hans Ulrich Obrist.
The retrospective is poised to be a significant event, highlighting Kanwar's profound impact on the international art scene. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and Documenta, the renowned international art exhibition.
