Josh Penn, an Academy Award-nominated producer recognized for "Beasts of the Southern Wild," has established Serenade, a new production company. Serenade will focus on developing both documentary and narrative films.
The company's inaugural project, "The Oldest Person in the World," directed by Sam Green, premiered at Sundance this year. Serenade launches with a substantial portfolio of more than a dozen films, spanning various stages from development to post-production.
Notable fiction projects include "Dave, Dave, Ruth & Dave" and "Here for the Weekend." The documentary slate features films such as Natalia Almada's "Captions Will be Needed" and a documentary about Assata Shakur directed by Giselle and Stephen Bailey.
Sam Green's live documentary "Trees," set to premiere at London's Barbican Centre, is also in production. This ambitious work combines live performance, orchestras, and cinema, with a score by Caroline Shaw.
Furthermore, Serenade will provide consulting services to filmmakers and industry organizations. Penn's prior experience includes co-founding The Department of Motion Pictures, where he produced over 20 films and secured distribution deals with major platforms.
