Asian Shadows has acquired international rights to the South Korean documentary "The Seoul Guardians." Directed by Jong Woo Kim, Shin Wan Kim, and Chul Young Cho, the film will premiere at the 55th International Film Festival Rotterdam. It chronicles six hours of intense events on December 3, 2024, after then-President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law.
The documentary captures the dramatic convergence of citizens, lawmakers, soldiers, and police at South Korea's National Assembly. Amidst rising chaos and memories of the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising, citizens and lawmakers actively blocked martial law troops. This resistance occurred after the President accused the Democratic Party of communist collaboration and banned political activities.
Following these events, President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached. Lee Jae Myung subsequently became South Korea's new President. The film, produced by Sona Jo and Shin Wan Kim for MBC, is noted for its raw depiction of citizens defending democratic law during a period of uncertainty.
