- The school faces displacement due to a new commercial port.
- Founded in 1998, it's Africa's premier contemporary dance hub.

The École des Sables, located near Dakar, Senegal, is a pioneering dance institution renowned for its unconventional outdoor studio set on sand. Founded in 1998 by Germaine Acogny, often called the mother of African contemporary dance, the school has grown into Africa's most prestigious dance training center. It offers intensive courses in Acogny's unique technique, incorporating Western African styles, alongside traditional and Black modern dance forms.
The school's global impact is evident through its international tours, including Pina Bausch's 'The Rite of Spring,' and upcoming events like the African Dance Biennial. Acogny established the school to provide high-level training on the continent, enabling African dancers to achieve international excellence without needing to travel abroad.
However, the École des Sables faces significant challenges. It struggles with financial stability due to a lack of state funding, relying on international foundations and corporate partnerships. More pressingly, a new $1.2 billion deepwater commercial port being developed by Dubai Port World in Ndayane threatens to expropriate land essential to the school and its natural surroundings.
Acogny and local arts institutions have united to oppose the port's expansion, citing a lack of consultation and environmental concerns. Despite these threats, Acogny remains determined, continuing to inspire the next generation of dancers with her nature-infused technique, which emphasizes connection to the environment and personal expression.
