- Renovations will close main venues from 2027 to 2032.
- Bychkov aims to expand symphonic repertoire during closures.

Soviet-born American conductor Semyon Bychkov is set to become the Paris Opera's next music director. He will officially assume the role at the start of the 2028-29 season, following a period as music director designate starting August 1. His mandate is set to run through the end of the 2031-32 season. This appointment follows the unexpected departure of Gustavo Dudamel over two years prior.
Bychkov's tenure is notably timed with significant renovations of the opera's primary performance venues. The Palais Garnier is slated for closure from 2027 to 2029, while the Opéra Bastille will undergo renovations from 2030 to 2032. Bychkov views this challenging period as a unique chance to expand the opera's symphonic offerings, similar to the programming of La Scala or the Berlin State Opera.
The 73-year-old conductor, currently chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, expressed that the orchestra's musicians approached him directly, requesting he lead them. He insisted on and secured an overwhelming vote of confidence from them before accepting. He aims to preserve the unique identity and French character of the Paris Opera orchestra.
