The narrative follows Selvi, a homecare nurse who steps in for her collapsed best friend, Kavitha. As Selvi juggles multiple patient care duties, she confronts the profound weight of guilt, love, and the sheer struggle for survival, blurring the lines between caregiving and overwhelming exhaustion.
Director Rathnakumar was inspired by the silent struggles of homecare nurses, many of whom are migrants from smaller towns in Tamil Nadu. He connected with their aspirations for a better life and the endurance required to navigate uncertain circumstances, mirroring his own migrant experience.
"Selvi" is described as a story about quiet perseverance, where the protagonist keeps moving forward despite life's challenges. The film focuses on small gestures and silent routines, portraying a resilience that often goes unnoticed. Producer Anjali Patil highlighted the project's honest and sensitive portrayal of homecare nurses, a community rarely seen on screen.
Patil expressed interest in collaborations with partners from Europe, Asia, and North America who appreciate intimate, character-driven cinema. She believes the film's core themes of migration, perseverance, and everyday resilience will resonate globally with audiences across cultures.
