Following his historic Academy Awards triumph in 2025 for "Anora," director Sean Baker is set to premiere his new short film, "Sandiwara." Produced by fashion house Self-Portrait, the film features Michelle Yeoh and is set in Penang, Malaysia.
"Sandiwara," which translates to "drama" in Malay, explores Malaysian culture through its food, music, and women. Baker, who co-wrote and edited Taiwan's Oscar submission "Left-Handed Girl" since his awards success, emphasizes his commitment to independent filmmaking.
He confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that his future feature films will maintain a similar independent scale and budget, eschewing franchise blockbusters. Michelle Yeoh, recently seen in "Wicked," will next appear in "Blade Runner 2099." "Sandiwara" will debut at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.
