Alexis Alexiou's latest film, "Sea of Glass," is set to premiere in Greece following its showing at the Edinburgh Film Festival. The movie unfolds in an off-season resort town on Evia island, characterized as a "country gothic noir." The story centers on Vangelio, a 65-year-old woman who, after her husband's death, seeks an escape from her difficult life.
She travels to a resort on Evia, where she meets Vicky, a younger woman facing her own struggles with an abusive father. Vangelio intervenes when her father becomes violent, leading to a confrontation and their joint pursuit of liberation. The film, written by Alexiou and Afroditi Nikolaidou, draws inspiration from classic noirs and films like "Thelma & Louise."
"Sea of Glass" delves into the complexities of family relationships and the quiet struggles within seemingly unremarkable places. Nikolaidou highlights the "secret side" of these small seaside resorts, portraying them as settings that hold hidden histories and past brutalities. The landscape itself, with nature reclaiming developed areas, mirrors the theme of resilience.
The film is produced by Greece's Tugo Tugo Prods. with international co-production. It features Evangelia Andreadaki and newcomer Christiana Matelska Toka in lead roles. The Thessaloniki Film Festival runs from November 5 to November 15, 2026.
