Downtown Scranton is preparing to host a massive St. Patrick's Day celebration this Saturday, drawing thousands of revelers. The day's events commence with a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Peter's Cathedral, honoring St. Patrick. This is followed by the Brian P. Kelly Memorial St. Patrick's Parade 2-Mile Footrace at 11 a.m.
The main parade, presented by the St. Patrick's Parade Day Association of Lackawanna County, is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 3½ hours. This year's parade is larger than the previous, boasting at least 145 entries. These include nine bagpipe bands, seven high school bands, and a string band. The Lackawanna Historical Society will also participate with a contingent celebrating the United States' 250th anniversary.
Erin Keating, Scranton School District superintendent, will serve as the grand marshal. The parade route includes streets such as Wyoming Avenue, Lackawanna Avenue, Biden Street, and North Washington Avenue. Police have implemented several street closures starting at 9:30 a.m. to accommodate the event. Enhanced security will be a priority, with numerous officers on patrol and at a command center to manage crowds and ensure public safety.
