Scranton Reptile Expo: More Than Just Snakes!

The Electric City Reptile Expo, established in March 2023, has successfully established itself as a significant gathering for reptile enthusiasts in Scranton. Held multiple times a year, the event now attracts between 50 to 60 vendors and approximately 1,000 visitors from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland.

Matthew Helring, the event's founder, was inspired to create a local expo due to the lack of accessible venues for reptile hobbyists. He highlighted the immense interest and the growth of the event since its inception.

A key attraction is the variety of animals available, with ball pythons being particularly popular due to their extensive polymorphism, often compared to collecting Pokémon cards. The expo also features other reptiles such as crested geckos, rainbow boas, and Honduran milk snakes.

Beyond sales, the expo serves an educational purpose. Vendors like Peter Rushton of P.T. Reptiles and Michelle McClintock of IDeal Boas provide hands-on experiences and share knowledge to dispel misconceptions about reptiles, emphasizing their nature as non-threatening companions.

Reptiles are promoted as ideal pets for individuals seeking companionship without the intensive care requirements of traditional pets. They are described as low-maintenance, allowing owners to interact with them on their own terms, offering a unique pet ownership experience.
