Scheherazade's Untold Story Captivates Kolkata's Sabhagar Theatre Festival

The Sabhagar Theatre Festival is making a highly anticipated return to Kolkata this November, promising a renewed commitment to imaginative and meaningful stage productions. Scheduled to take place from November 12-16, 2025, the festival will showcase five diverse works from across India.

At the heart of this year's festival is "The Nights" by Katkatha Puppet Theatre from Delhi, directed by the acclaimed Anurupa Roy. The production revisits the world of Scheherazade from the classic collection One Thousand and One Nights, but with a fresh perspective. Instead of presenting the familiar tales, the work focuses on Scheherazade herself, exploring her journey as a survivor, witness, and woman who uses storytelling as a means of presence and protection.

Through sculpted figures, shifting light, and the movement of performers, "The Nights" delves into how stories are shaped by the people who tell them and the audiences who listen. The festival's lineup also includes productions from Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai, covering a wide range of themes and styles.

With "The Nights" as its centerpiece, the Sabhagar Theatre Festival invites Kolkata to experience theatre that is thoughtful, layered, and alive. The event promises to captivate audiences with its commitment to innovative and imaginative stage work.
