- A subplot involves a company that 3D prints bodily organs.
- Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis star with notable chemistry.

The highly anticipated series "Scarpetta," featuring Nicole Kidman as the titular character and Jamie Lee Curtis as an executive producer and star, has finally premiered after a long development period. However, the adaptation of Patricia Cornwell's novels is described as a "dire" and "trashy drama" that attempts to modernize the source material with a "cynical techy spin."
The narrative unfolds across two timelines, presenting forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta (Kidman) in the present day and as a younger investigator in the 1990s. Early on, it seemed the series might offer a smart whodunnit, exploring the possibility that Scarpetta and her colleague Pete Marino (Bobby Cannavale) apprehended the wrong suspect in the past. Instead, the show is a "sluggish procedural" with unexplained gore and sudden plot revelations.
Further complicating the plot, "Scarpetta" controversially incorporates an AI chatbot named Janet as a central character, alongside a sub-plot involving 3D-printed organs that culminates in an astronaut-related death. This modernization attempt is seen as an excessive addition to the original narrative. Despite the strong chemistry between Kidman and Curtis, who play warring siblings, their performances are insufficient to elevate the series above its perceived mediocrity.
