Johansson recounted in an interview that the financier objected to the core of the film's story, rather than logistical concerns. She emphasized that the story needed to explore the consequences of profound deception. When the backer insisted on cutting the Holocaust elements, Johansson stood firm, resulting in the withdrawal of their financial backing.

This refusal initially left the film without budget coverage. However, the situation was resolved when Sony Pictures Classics stepped in as a distributor, ensuring that filming could proceed as planned.
