Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed the reasons behind her initial reluctance to return as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her eventual decision to revisit the role. The series concluded its seven-season run in 2003, and Gellar had publicly expressed a strong stance against reprising her character.
Speaking about her change of heart, Gellar attributed the shift to director Chloé Zhao. She explained that Zhao presented a unique and compelling take on the Buffy-verse, which finally convinced Gellar to consider the possibility. Gellar noted that she had previously said 'no' to the idea multiple times, even to Zhao initially.
The journey to greenlighting the new project, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was a protracted one. Gellar described the decision-making process as taking years, with her frequently oscillating between accepting and rejecting the opportunity, likening herself to Cameron Frye from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Gellar highlighted Zhao's passion, understanding of the world, and clear reasoning for why the project was necessary and why now. This detailed approach, combined with Gellar being in a different personal and global context, ultimately led to her agreement to return to the beloved franchise.
