A unique theatre initiative, "The Will of Shakespeare," unites 20 young performers from KIIT and KISS in Bhubaneswar. These artists, drawn from diverse backgrounds and tribal communities across India, are reinterpreting Shakespeare's iconic plays through the vibrant Santali cultural tradition. Their productions of Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet fuse Shakespeare's enduring themes with Santali music, dance, costumes, and oral storytelling.
The ensemble's innovative approach has already achieved international recognition. Earlier this year, they represented India at the International Shakespeare Festival in Craiova, Romania, where their distinctive interpretations were highly praised. This theatrical endeavor goes beyond performance; it is a celebration of cultural identity and artistic exchange.
The initiative aims to preserve and promote indigenous heritage by presenting Shakespeare in the Santali language and aesthetic traditions. Each play retains its core emotional and philosophical depth while embracing a distinct indigenous identity. The troupe's India tour seeks to foster conversations on cultural diversity and amplify the visibility of tribal languages and performing arts.
