Sandra Hüller's acting evolution: Germany to Hollywood

Sandra Hüller is adjusting to her new status as a global star, recently returning to her hometown of Leipzig, Germany, to direct a play and raise her daughter. Her career took a significant leap with the 2016 comedy "Toni Erdmann," followed by an Oscar-nominated performance in "Anatomy of a Fall" and a role in "The Zone of Interest" in 2023. Hüller is now stepping away from theater acting to focus on directing.

Her recent work includes diverse roles, such as a 17th-century war veteran in "Rose" and a scientist in "Project Hail Mary." In "Fatherland," she portrays Erika Mann, the driving daughter of novelist Thomas Mann, on a post-war road trip. Hüller notes the complex dynamic and painful conflicts within the Mann family, reflecting on their privileged position during wartime.

She also recently portrayed a woman disguised as a man in "Rose," a role demanding significant restraint, and is slated to play artist Wolfgang Handel in "Work And Structure." Hüller found unexpected freedom and collaboration on the Hollywood blockbuster "Project Hail Mary," working with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Her next major project is "Digger," alongside Tom Cruise, directed by A.G. Iñárritu.
