San Sebastián Fest: Stars, Spain's Film Boom

The San Sebastián Film Festival is set to run from September 18-26, attracting notable figures such as Brad Pitt and Penelope Cruz. Cruz will present multiple films, potentially positioning them as Oscar contenders. Werner Herzog and Naomi Watts are also honored with prestigious awards during the festival's opening days.

The festival will host the San Sebastián-CAA Media Finance Creative Investors Conference, discussing industry challenges and opportunities in the U.S. and Europe. This includes insights into evolving theatrical audiences and the impact of new technologies.

Spain's cinematic output has reached new heights, with global streamers investing €2.0 billion in 2024 alone. The country produced 423 features last year, significantly more than France's 228. This surge in production underscores Spain's growing power in the international film landscape.

Several Spanish films, including Movistar Plus Originals like "La Bola Negra," are generating significant buzz. The "Made in Spain" section will feature 24 films, showcasing the diversity and quality of recent Spanish productions.

The festival will also premiere anticipated titles like Fred Cavayé's "Les Miserables" and feature new works from emerging international directors. Pablo Larraín's "My Sad Dead" is among the competition's most talked-about entries.

Movistar Plus is set to double its Spanish original series production and is actively involved in film co-productions, signaling a robust future for Spanish content creation. The festival provides a platform to gauge their future roadmap.

Basque cinema is also represented by new talents, despite no entries in the main competition this year. Films like Igor Legarreta's "Blind Ants" highlight the region's production standards and emerging directorial voices.

Festival Director José Luis Rebordinos, who is set to conclude his tenure in January 2027, has been instrumental in stabilizing and elevating the festival's profile and driving Spain's film industry growth.
