San Francisco has revamped its film incentive program, introducing substantial tax credits to draw more productions back to the city. Mayor Daniel Lurie signed legislation that updates the program, offering productions a 20 percent rebate on qualified spending and full rebates on city fees, capped at $1 million. These changes aim to make the city more competitive with other locations offering lucrative subsidies.
The updated program is a significant overhaul from the previous version, which had not been changed since 2006. The new incentives are designed to boost local economic activity by encouraging more filming within the city. Film Commission executive director Manijeh Fata highlighted that this initiative supports various local businesses and union crews, fostering a robust entertainment industry.
This strategic update is intended to reverse the trend of fewer productions choosing San Francisco in recent years. Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman emphasized the need to keep jobs and economic activity within the city. Directors and producers, including Beth de Araújo and Morgan Sackett, have expressed optimism that these changes will encourage more filmmakers to create content in San Francisco's unique setting.
