Comedian Samay Raina's Lawyer Scrutinizes New Show Amidst Controversy

The legal team for comedian Samay Raina is now closely examining each episode of the second season of 'India's Got Latent.' This review follows recent public criticism and political backlash directed at the show for an exchange concerning Bihar and Kashmir. Raina's lawyer, Lavin Hirani, stated in an exclusive interview that the goal is not to stifle the show's creative essence.

Hirani explained that as legal counsel, they must ensure creative freedom isn't completely curtailed, as this would jeopardize the show's existence. The current legal scrutiny occurs shortly after the Supreme Court quashed criminal proceedings against Raina and others on August 14, related to earlier insensitive remarks.

The original petition concerning disability remarks aimed to establish guidelines for depicting people with disabilities in media, not merely to reprimand comedians. Hirani noted that efforts to address the concerns, including awareness initiatives and fundraising, were acknowledged by the court.

Regarding the current criticism, Hirani believes there is no simple legal formula to define where comedy crosses a line, as context and sensitivities are paramount. He compared this to interpreting obscenity and defamation, where legal gray areas require nuanced judgment. In a diverse country like India, he acknowledges that causing offense is almost inevitable, with the gravity of the offense being the key factor.

Hirani also highlighted the challenges celebrities face, including media trials and the impact of public perception, which necessitates looking beyond the strict letter of the law. Furthermore, he identified Artificial Intelligence and the rise of deepfakes as significant contemporary legal challenges for celebrities, emphasizing the importance of personality rights in combating infringing content online.
