The Saltdean Lido in Brighton has been awarded a prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) South East award, recognizing the completion of its 14-year restoration project. This significant renovation, costing £11m, revitalized the Grade II* listed Art Deco building, which was originally built in the 1930s. The project concluded in 2024, thanks to substantial community donations and National Lottery funding.
RIBA jury chair Craig Sheach lauded the winning projects, including the Lido's revamp, as "exceptional." He highlighted how these schemes demonstrate the power of community collaboration in creating special, innovative, and well-crafted spaces. The awards, now in their 60th year, celebrate outstanding architecture across the UK.
Other South East recipients included a health and wellbeing center, a converted garage home, a sustainable rural dwelling, and a building at Brighton College. These South East winners are now advancing to contend for the RIBA National Award in July, with national winners progressing to the RIBA Stirling Prize later in the year.
