Sagrada Familia's Secret: Glue Holds Tallest Church Together

The Sagrada Familia, now the world's tallest religious temple at 172.5 metres, incorporates a unique construction element: 24 tonnes of specialized industrial glue. This adhesive, Loctite EA 9497, bonds over 2,100 stone elements to metal structures across 826 prestressed stone panels, enabling stone and steel to function as a single material. The immense bonding strength is essential for the basilica's stability, especially given its coastal location near the Mediterranean and the vibrations from two underground metro lines.

Antoni Gaudí's ambitious design, initiated in 1882, has seen a century of evolution. While Gaudí initially used local sandstone, supply shortages necessitated sourcing stones internationally. Subsequent architects have interpreted his complex geometric visions, with digital modeling and 3D simulation playing a pivotal role in design and execution. Much of the construction now occurs off-site, with elements prefabricated in external workshops before being transported to Barcelona for assembly.

Construction continues on the basilica, which was blessed by Pope Leo XVI last week. Although the central tower was completed this year, the entire structure remains unfinished, with 2026 once cited as a symbolic completion date coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí's death. The project's ongoing success is a testament to innovation and collaboration, funded solely by visitor contributions.
