In a recent interview, acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler shared that he found unexpected inspiration for his latest horror hit 'Sinners' in an unlikely source – the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie 'The Luck of the Irish'. Coogler, who has just delivered one of the highest-grossing horror films of the year, explained that the DCOM's exploration of Irish culture and folklore sparked his team's fascination with the parallels between Irish and Black communities.
This connection directly influenced the creation of the villainous character Remmick, played by Jack O'Connell, in Coogler's Mississippi Delta-set vampire story. "That movie was kind of a touchpoint for us to jump off of," the director noted, praising O'Connell's "beautiful performance" that brought the character's complex backstory to life.
Coogler also acknowledged the profound impact of incorporating his own family's memories and experiences into the film, mirroring the way O'Connell drew from his father's legacy. With its nods to iconic Irish author Bram Stoker, 'Sinners' has clearly become a labor of love for Coogler, who continues to find inspiration in unexpected places.
