Black Lesbian Othello Stuns RSC Future Production
1 Jul
Summary
- Sharon D Clarke to play Othello as black lesbian general.
- Production set in the future to explore misogynoir themes.
- RSC season includes new plays and touring productions.
The Royal Shakespeare Company is set to present a groundbreaking production of Othello, casting three-time Olivier winner Sharon D Clarke in the titular role. This futuristic reimagining will depict Othello as a black lesbian general, exploring the 400-year-old tragedy through the concept of misogynoir—hatred directed at Black women. Clarke, who is an out lesbian, aims to infuse the character with both strength and vulnerability, drawing from her own life experiences.
The production, directed by Monique Touko, will be set in the future to enhance its thematic exploration and avoid historical camouflage. Clarke emphasized that the play will examine how Othello navigates a predominantly male environment while maintaining her dignity and power. This bold casting choice follows previous historical milestones for the RSC, including the casting of a Black actor as Iago in 2015 and a lesbian Othello in a 2018 production at Liverpool's Everyman.
This innovative production is part of the RSC's expanded 2026-27 season. The season also features Rufus Norris's directorial debut with Brock's Mill, a touring version of The Merry Wives of Windsor, and an adaptation of the children's book The Bear and the Piano. The company has also announced new appointments, including Martin Lowe as music associate. Artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey stated their commitment to welcoming audiences through diverse storytelling and re-examining classic texts through new perspectives.
