Box Office Math: Why 70 Crores Isn't Success
15 Jan
Summary
- Rs 100 crores benchmark is less relevant for big Hindi films today.
- Celebrating 60-70 crores for large films is misleading, says analyst.
- Ghajini's first Rs 100 crores was achieved with fewer theatres and lower ticket prices.

The traditional Rs 100 crores box office milestone is losing its significance for large-scale Hindi films, according to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh. He noted that while achieving this figure remains a strong indicator for mid-range cinema, its application to current big-budget productions starring leading actors is becoming questionable. Adarsh specifically criticized the practice of portraying Rs 60-70 crores collections as a success for major films.
Adarsh drew a parallel to the industry's first Rs 100 crores film, 'Ghajini', which achieved the feat nearly two decades ago. He highlighted the vastly different conditions then, including fewer theaters, lower ticket prices, and less favorable show timings, making the achievement more substantial. Today, he contends, celebrating lower figures for blockbuster-level films is misleading and detracts from genuine commercial success.
