Royal Mix-Up: Earl of Wessex Title Error Spotted
23 Jun
Summary
- Court Circular incorrectly listed James, Earl of Wessex, for an event.
- Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, actually attended the event.
- James recently made a public appearance at Royal Ascot.
Buckingham Palace experienced a rare misstep with an error in the Court Circular on Sunday. The official record incorrectly stated that James, the 18-year-old Earl of Wessex, attended a Regimental Gathering at Somme Barracks. The engagement was actually performed by his father, Prince Edward, who holds the title of Colonel of the Scots Guards. Prince Edward was granted the Earl of Wessex title in 1999 and became the Duke of Edinburgh in 2023.
While the young Earl of Wessex may not have attended the military event, he recently stood in for his father at Royal Ascot. James made his debut at the prestigious Berkshire racecourse, joining his mother, Duchess Sophie, in the royal box. The teenager has had a busy period, also attending Peter Phillips' wedding to Harriet Sperling. His older sister, Lady Louise Windsor, was absent as she concludes her studies.
James is currently pursuing his A-levels at Radley College. His parents, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, have aimed to provide their children with a relatively normal upbringing, choosing not to use HRH titles for them and expecting them to work for a living.
